Is Bengali Easy or Hard to Learn?

Bengali can be challenging because of its script and pronunciation, but it has a rich literary tradition and consistent grammar.

Bengali is, for sure, not the easiest language to learn for an English speaker, but it might surprise you to find out that it is not so difficult either. Even if at the beginning you may struggle a bit, you can become comfortable studying this beautiful language quite quickly.

Why you will like studying Bengali

Bengali belongs to the Indo-Iranian language family, but unlike other Indian languages like Hindi or Punjabi, Bengali grammar is much easier. Here are the main reasons why:

Verb conjugation is generally more regular than in many European languages, and it usually does not present a challenge for learners.

Bengali has an easy case system; in fact, the only thing to pay attention to is the accusative marker -কে (-ke).

Bengali forms the plural quite regularly by adding গুলো (-gulo) or -গুলি (-guli), much more easily than in Hindi.

And most importantly, Bengali has no grammatical gender.

Yes, in Bengali grammar there are no genders. So you do not have to spend a lot of time learning which gender each category belongs to, and more importantly, you do not have to make other words like adjectives and pronouns agree with the gender of a noun.

Except for some sounds, pronunciation is often predictable from spelling once you have learned the script, so you can express yourself without making major mistakes in a very short period of time.

Another advantage is that Bengali has over 250 million speakers all around the world, from India to the Americas, making it one of the world’s most widely spoken languages. So you will have plenty of opportunities to practice.

However, there are some factors that make Bengali challenging:

A completely different alphabet

Bengali uses its own writing system (বাংলা), so you will need to learn a new alphabet and how letters combine. Like all languages that do not use the Latin alphabet, it will require some time before you get used to it.

However, the Bengali alphabet is mostly phonetic: once you learn the letters, words are usually pronounced as written. Moreover, it has relatively consistent spelling rules compared to English.

Limited shared vocabulary

Even though Bengali is also an Indo-European language (yes, Bengali and English belong to the same family, even if they are far apart), Bengali shares relatively little core vocabulary with English, so many common words must be learned from scratch.

Different levels of speech

Honorifics and levels of formality: the language changes depending on who you are speaking to, which can take time to master.

How long does it take to learn Bengali?

As a rough estimate, if you are an English speaker studying consistently, you can handle basic conversation quite well in 3 to 6 months and become fluent in around one year.
