How to Type in Chinese: Keyboard Input Like a Native

How Chinese keyboard input methods work, including Pinyin typing and other tools used to write Chinese characters.

If you've ever looked at Chinese characters, you may have wondered, how can Chinese people type with all of those characters on a computer or phone? After all, a regular keyboard only has around 100 keys, while the Chinese language has thousands of characters.

The answer is simpler than many people think. Chinese people don't have special keyboards with thousands of buttons. Instead, they use smart input methods that make typing fast and easy. There are four main methods used for typing Chinese characters.

The Most Common Method: Pinyin

The most popular way is by using Pinyin. Pinyin is a system that writes the pronunciation of Chinese characters using the Latin alphabet, the same letters we use in English.

For example, if someone wants to type the character for you 你 (ni), they simply type it in Pinyin on a standard keyboard. The computer then shows a list of all characters that are pronounced ni. Because many Chinese characters have the same pronunciation, several options usually appear, so the user has to choose the correct one among them. Anyway, modern computers and phones are very good at predicting which character you want based on the words you are typing.

You Usually Don't Need to Type the Tones

If you've studied Chinese, you know that Pinyin normally includes tone marks, such as mā, má, mǎ, and mà. In fact, you probably already know that the tone can change the meaning of a word completely.

The good news is that native speakers almost never type these tones. They simply type the letters, such as ma, and the input method figures out the correct character from the context.

Moreover, nowadays typing software is so advanced that people often type only the first letters of each syllable. So, instead of typing the full Pinyin for a common phrase, they may enter just the initials, and the software can still guess what they mean. For example, if you want to write hello 你好 (nǐ hǎo), you simply write the letters n and h. This makes typing much faster.

But not everyone who speaks Chinese uses Pinyin. In Taiwan, many people type using another system of writing called Zhuyin (also called Bopomofo).

Instead of using the Latin alphabet, Zhuyin has its own set of symbols that represent Chinese sounds. It is an alphabet, but it looks more like Chinese symbols, just simpler, and the typing process is very similar to Pinyin. You simply enter the pronunciation, and the computer suggests the matching characters—but the symbols are different.

Shape-Based Input Methods

Before Pinyin became the standard, many people used shape-based input methods such as Wubi.

Instead of typing the pronunciation, Wubi users type keys based on the shape and structure of each character. This method can be extremely fast once mastered, but it takes much longer to learn because you need to understand how characters are built.

Today, Wubi is much less common, although some professional typists still prefer it.

Handwriting Input

Many phones and tablets also allow users to write characters directly on the screen with a finger or stylus. This method is especially popular with some older people who learned to handwrite characters long before computers and Pinyin input became common.

However, as you can probably guess, it is much more complicated since you need to know exactly how to write a character and not only recognize it. (Not everyone in China knows exactly how to write all characters since they are very complex.) Moreover, handwriting is usually slower than typing with Pinyin, so writing a message will take much more time.

Voice Typing

Another increasingly popular option is using speech-to-text technologies. Users simply speak into their phone, and the software converts their words into Chinese characters automatically. As voice recognition technology has improved, especially since artificial intelligence has arrived, this has become a fast and convenient way to send messages or write short texts. But it has a big problem because it is not always possible to speak in public, especially about personal topics.

Before Computers

Long before computers existed, everything was written by hand using a brush or pen. When typewriters were introduced, Chinese typewriters were very different from Western ones. Instead of having a few dozen keys, they contained trays with thousands of individual characters. Finding the right character could be slow and required a lot of practice. There are a lot of videos online that show you complex and big machines used to type.

Therefore, modern digital input methods have made writing Chinese much easier and faster than ever before, making life much simpler for millions of people.
